Within four days, Devilsdorp topped  previous ratings records on Showmax

Devilsdorp, a true-crime series, premiered on Showmax on July 29, 2021 to rave reviews and quickly rose to the top of the South African Top 20.

The four-part docu-series investigates 11 killings between 2012 and 2016, and how they were all traced back to Cecilia Steyn and the Electus per Deus (Chosen by God) cult.

Now, Showmax has some good news for everyone still trying to figure out how a small group of devout Christians could become involved in a murderous spree that involved a killer mother, her two children, and a cult with more victims than members.

South Africa’s first true-crime podcast focused on victims’ stories is presented by Nicole Engelbrecht, the host of Devilsdorp, Showmax’s official companion podcast.

Here is the Devilsdorp trailer directed by David Enright and produced by IdeaCandy at https://youtu.be/MJRwOVAuXoU.

“Of course, I was thrilled when Showmax contacted me about producing a companion podcast for this series. Through this research, I hoped to get beneath the surface of the case’s public narrative, to dispel some of its distracting features, and to grasp the psyches of the criminals. In the worst-case scenario, if even one person is able to take away some insight from this podcast, it’s something positive that has emerged from it, “said Engelbrecht.

The first episode of Halo in Hell will explore how religion was used as a weapon in this case.

A second episode, titled How to Convince People to Do What You Want, explores the psychology of cults and how Cecilia Steyn manipulated people to carry out her will.

In the third episode, Mother Dearest, journalist Marizka Coetzer explains how she fell in love with Marinda Steyn’s son, Le Roux Steyn, and how she twisted him into killing him.

A fourth episode, The Aftermath, will investigate the case’s impact on journalists and police officers, as well as other possible incidents related to Electus Per Deus.

A number of the documentary’s contributors are interviewed in-depth, including Marx, clinical psychologist Louis Awerbuck, and the video’s senior investigator, Captain Ben Booysen, who correctly compares himself to Chuck Norris.

Showmax set a record for most hours viewed in the first four days of any movie or series, surpassing games like Game of Thrones, The Real Housewives of Durban, and The River.

Devilsdorp dominated the social media over the weekend, with Khaya Dlanga tweeting, “I have never seen a South African documentary as bizarre, craziest, and incredible as this.” Imagine all this happening in a small town between 2012 and 2016?! Wild! # Devilsdorp

Waldimar Pelser, Rapport editor, posted on Facebook that Devilsdorp is one of the best crime documentaries he has ever seen.=

“There are also some good cops in our country,” wrote Pelser.
