The African Transformation Movement (ATM) says it sees President Cyril Ramaphosa’s action of appointing Deputy Justice Raymond Zondo to the position of Chief Justice as a betrayal of the consultative process, in which the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) gave a solid recommendation for Judge Mandisa Maya’s appointment through an objective interview panel procedure.
“It is the ATM’s position that the non-appointment of Judge Maya to the office of Chief Justice is unreasonable and must be reviewed and set aside,” said ATM National Spokesperson Sibusiso Mnewabe.
The ATM said that noting the appointment of the presiding judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Judge Maya as Deputy Chief Justice, “We say she deserves better.”

“The rejection of the JSC recommendation has far-reaching implications beyond being undermined. It means the President ignores the checks and balances embedded our Constitution to prevent abuse of office, “Mnewabe said.
Mnewabe said President Ramaphosa’s action was unfortunate but not surprising considering how he is out of touch with South Africa’s transformation realities.
“In fact, Ramaphaos must take all the blame for the transformation reversal in our country,” added Mnewbe.
