Zwane ignores the law to loot his department, says DA

Mosebenzi Zwane’s appointment to the Free State’s Department of Human Settlements, Agriculture and Rural Development which has led to the R3 billion housing and the R380 million Vrede dairy farm project scandals were not coincidence, Free State Legislature’s DA Leader, Dr. Roy Jankielsohn said in a statement on Friday.

The former MEC for Human Settlement, Zwane testified to the Zondo Commission of Inquiry his department didn’t follow due process when appointing the contractor, adding that the project got a green light from the provincial executive council, led by former Premier Ace Magashule.

In his defense,” said Dr. Jankielsohn, Zwane’s was basing his testimony at the Commission on ignorance of the laws and government tender procedures, which he deliberately throws those involved under the bus of accountability.

Self-confessed ignorance of the rights laws and requirements for his position is only a smokescreen but should be a cause for concern about his promotions from Mayor to MEC and later to Minister in the ANC-led government.

“Ignorance is a requirement for ANC promotion as a result Free State government elected Zwane as the political leader to loot the departments,” said Dr. Jankielsohn.

Dr. Jankielsohn said the snare of justice closes the necks of former Free State politicians such as Zwane and Magashule as officials are no longer willing to step in to protect their former political heads.

“Current Premier Sefora Ntombela and former MEC for Human Settlements during Magashule’s term pledged to investigate the R1 billion housing scandal in 2016.

To this day, he has evaded responsibility as the provincial political leader in power and having resources to make sure of investigations and accountability for allegations of corruption and mismanagement,” added Dr. Jankielsohn.
