Police in Limpopo are ready for the upcoming elections, with extra measures in place to ensure safety and security.
Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, has announced that police and various law enforcement agencies in Limpopo are fully prepared and equipped to ensure safety and security of all citizens during the upcoming national and provincial government elections.
This includes having personnel trained and ready to respond to any security threats or incidents that may arise during the electoral process.
The focus is on maintaining peace and order, as well as safeguarding the democratic rights of all individuals to participate in the elections without fear of intimidation or violence.
The police and law enforcement agencies are committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring a secure environment for the electoral process to proceed smoothly.
Limpopo Police Commissioners Lieutenant General, Thembi Hadebe has outlined plans to maintain law and order during the election period.
Lt Gen Hadebe said members have been deployed and resources increased to safeguard polling stations and critical areas.
She said an operational plan is in place to address potential threats and prevent violence.
“Community involvement is key, with engagement from local leaders and civil society. Public awareness campaigns are ongoing to educate citizens on safety protocols,” said Lt Gen Hadebe..
The plan follows the recent violence at Juju valley in Seshego, still under investigation, with arrests expected soon.
Limpopo Police Spokesperson ,Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the violence erupted during a campaign event between rival political parties, leading to an escalation that endangered the lives of people and damage to infrastructures.
He said preliminary investigation indicates that several other people sustained injuries after the members hit each other with stones and several shots were fired.
There are no arrests yet with regard to all these cases, but police have intensified investigations to track down and arrest the suspects.
Brigadier Mashaba said arrests are imminent..
According to Lt Gen Hadebe a Prayer Day for safer elections was held in collaboration with various groups.for smooth and incident free elections throughout the country.
She said law enforcement agencies are working with the Independent Electoral Commission and other bodies to ensure a smooth election process.
Lt Gen Hadebe emphasised the commitment to upholding democracy and the rule of law.
The public is urged to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities. Any attempts to disrupt the elections will be dealt with decisively.
The police commissioner added that law enforcement agencies are prepared for any situation.
