The South African music industry is mourning the loss of kwaito pioneer Doc Shebeleza, who passed away on Thursday at his home in Fairlands, north of Johannesburg.
The 51-year-old musician, born Victor Bogopane, had been battling health issues and was hospitalized twice last year.
Doc Shebeleza’s music career spanned over two decades, with hits like “S’kumfete,” “Ebumnandini,” and “Ghets Ghetsa” making him a household name in the 1990s.
Born in Naledi, Soweto in 1973, Doc Shebeleza was introduced to music at a young age and drew inspiration from legends like Brenda Fassie and Mandoza.
With a career that began in the 1990s, Doc Shebeleza released his debut album “Shebeleza” in 1995, followed by “S’kumfete,” “Tiger,” and “Ebumnandini.”
His unique sound and style helped shape the kwaito genre, leaving an indelible mark on South African music.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media, with entertainment commentator Phil Mphela sharing the news of Doc Shebeleza’s passing.
The cause of death is still unknown.
