Democratic Alliance (DA) came out swinging against South African Navy recent purchase of six luxury Audi Q5 SUVs, each valued at over R1 million.
The party’s spokesperson on Defence and Military Veterans, Chris Hattingh, lambasted decision as glaring example of ongoing neglect for critical needs of South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
In a scathing statement, Hattingh criticised top naval officials for prioritising luxury vehicles over essential vehicles and equipment that are in disrepair or outdated due to limited funds.
He raised concerns about the timing of purchase, suggesting it may have been a case of fiscal dumping to exhaust budget before the end of fiscal year.
The DA plans to submit parliamentary questions to get clarification on justification for buying luxury vehicles for top naval officials while soldiers are facing resource shortages.
The party also want to know if the purchase was made in the final weeks of budget year to avoid funds being returned and the reasoning behind choosing luxury cars over essential equipment and vehicle repairs for SANDF.
“This extravagant spending showcases culture of privilege within military leadership, with red carpets and golf days while soldiers are left struggling without proper resources,” said Hattingh, adding it is yet another example of weak leadership that fails to prioritize the needs of South Africa and its military personnel.
The DA is demanding transparency from the Minister of Defence and the Chief of the SANDF, emphasising that South Africans deserve military leadership that prioritises security and responsible governance over luxury. Hattingh concluded stating, “The DA will not rest until we have answers on this.
