A police officer attached to the Silverton police station in Pretoria found himself on the wrong side of the law on Wednesday
The 44-year-old constable was nabbed driving suspected stolen vehicle on the N1 South freeway outside Polokwane, Limpopo.
According to Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the officer was found with a staggering 2,095 sachets of Nyaope, valued at approximately R85,000.
He said the suspect was driving Nissan NP200 sporting Gauteng registration plates at the time of his arrest.
The arrest was made during an intelligence-driven operation by the Provincial Anti-Smuggling Unit in collaboration with Tshimollo private security near Shell Ultra City.
In addition to the drugs, the officer’s service pistol was also confiscated.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the swift action taken to apprehend the officer and issued a stern warning to others in the police force.
Hadebe emphasised that no one is above the law and that any officer caught breaking it will face severe consequences.
The arrested constable is currently detained at SAPS Westernburg and is set to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
