Democratic Alliance (DA) in Lephalale Local Municipality has taken a stand against African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip, Joseph Machaba, tabling a motion in council to refer him to ethics committee.
This comes after allegations surfaced that Machaba instructed municipal officials to remove all DA councillors from a strategic planning session and withhold relevant documents.
DA Councillor, Esrom Setho, spoke out against Machaba’s actions, stating it was direct violation of Municipal Systems Act.
Attempt to get hold of Lephalale Municipality spokesperson, Conscious Chiloane drew a blank.
In a statement on Thursday, Setho accused Machaba of abusing power and using bully tactics to exclude DA councillors from contributing to the session, aimed to improve the lives of local communities.
Setho also highlighted exorbitant costs incurred by municipality for the session at Palala Boutique Hotel, where 80 councillors and officials were accommodated at a staggering cost of R414,800.
He emphasised DA will not tolerate such unethical behaviour and will always stand for the rule of law and equality.
