Major smuggling operation in Limpopo nets illicit goods worth R3.6m

Musina, Limpopo – In a significant crackdown on smuggling operations, Limpopo police recovered goods valued at approximately R3.6 million during a successful intelligence-driven operation in Musina on Thursday.

The operation, conducted by the Anti-Smuggling team in collaboration with Tshimollo Security and Investigation, targeted a warehouse suspected of housing illegal items.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, officers gained entry to the unoccupied warehouse based on intelligence reports.

“We acted in accordance with Sections 20 and 22 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 to conduct a lawful search,” Mashaba stated.

The seizure included over 300 boxes of Adidas sneakers and soccer boots, tracked back to a theft from Durban Harbor on March 13, 2025.

The items, originally imported from Indonesia, were illicitly diverted before reaching their rightful destination.

In addition, authorities confiscated 100 boxes of illicit cigarettes, contributing to an estimated street value of R600,000.

Preliminary investigations have linked the warehouse to a prominent businessman in Musina, prompting police to intensify efforts to locate and apprehend the individual.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe emphasised the importance of intelligence-led policing, saying,

“This operation highlights our commitment to dismantling organized crime and smuggling syndicates that threaten our economy and public safety.”

Hadebe reassured the public of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) determination to disrupt criminal networks, underscoring the success of inter-agency collaboration in achieving these results. “We will continue to intensify our efforts to ensure that those responsible for such illegal activities face justice,” she added.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspects to contact Colonel Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5601 or Warrant Officer Phaladi Makola at 082 749 2233.
