The African National Congress (ANC)-led government is facing intensified scrutiny and criticism following the imposition of high import tariffs by the United States on South Africa.
Civil rights organization, AfriForum has publicly condemned ANC leadership, asserting their negligence in addressing U.S. concerns has led to adverse economic consequences for the nation.
AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel stated, “The punitive measures imposed by the U.S. could have been avoided if the ANC had been willing to engage constructively with American officials.
Instead, they dismissed legitimate grievances as ‘misinformation,’ resulting in retaliatory tariffs that now threaten our economy.”
The tariffs, which could significantly impact South African exports, are a culmination of U.S. frustration over several issues, including trade imbalances and local policies deemed unfavourable to American interests.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concerns over US tariffs, calling them “worrying” and signaling a shift in South Africa’s approach to trade negotiations.
Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition Parks Tau has also responded, stating that the tariffs have effectively nullified the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) benefits for South Africa.
Kriel emphasised the ANC must accept responsibility for the current crisis, arguing that their approach has jeopardised the country’s economic stability.
“The current leadership has prioritised their own interests over the needs of South Africans,” he added. “We need a change of direction that prioritises property and human rights for all citizens, especially minority communities.”
AfriForum has pledged to continue advocating for a more balanced foreign policy that favours interests of South African citizens.
Kriel maintains that addressing these issues directly is essential to lifting the U.S. tariffs and avoiding further economic strife.
