High-speed cross-border heist thwarted by Limpopo police in dramatic N1 chase

In a riveting display of vigilance, Limpopo Flying Squad intercepted stolen Toyota Cross SUV on Friday, May 16, 2025, foiling an alleged cross-border smuggling operation to Zimbabwe.

Acting on a tip-off about the vehicle stolen earlier this month from Pretoria Central, officers launched a high-stakes pursuit after spotting the grey SUV speeding along the N1 highway near Polokwane.

The suspect, driving recklessly at breakneck speeds, ignored police signals to stop, triggering a tense chase through the outskirts of the city.

Authorities finally cornered the vehicle at Nirvana traffic lights, where a search revealed a sabotaged tracking device – a telltale sign of organised crime.

“The driver refusal to comply forced our team into a rapid-response operation,” explained Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, Limpopo Police spokesperson. “When confronted, the 31-year-old male could provide no proof of ownership, leaving us no choice but to arrest him.”

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe hailed the recovery as a critical blow against transnational crime networks.

“This interception underscores our zero-tolerance stance on syndicates exploiting our borders,” she stated, urging officers to maintain relentless pressure on organized crime rings.

The suspect, now facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, is set to appear at Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 19, as investigators unravel potential links to broader smuggling operations.
