Remembering a legendary talent: Presley Chweneyagae impact on television and theatre

South Africa arts community mourns the loss of legendary actor Presley Chweneyagae, renowned globally for his Oscar-winning role in Tsotsi, who passed away this week at age 40 due to respiratory complications.

The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture expressed deep sorrow, extending condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

Committee Chairperson Joe McGluwa hailed Chweneyagae as an irreplaceable talent who “set the bar so high that it will be long before another legend emerges.”

Praising his humility and dedication, McGluwa noted, “The world adored his craft, and South Africa was privileged to call him one of our own.”

Chweneyagae rose to fame as the lead in Tsotsi, the first African film to win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Beyond this breakthrough role, he captivated audiences in Shakespearean classics like Hamlet and A Midsummer Night Dream, as well as in local productions such as Dikeledi.

Affectionately nicknamed “Cobrizi” after his character Cobra in a popular series, his career spanned theater, television, and film, leaving an indelible mark on the arts.

“His potential was boundless,” McGluwa added, reflecting on the actor untimely death. Tributes continue to pour in for the star whose legacy transcends borders.
