Soweto marks 49 years since uprising with Sarafina revival

Soweto is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of the June 16 Uprising with a revival of Sarafina, the renowned protest musical that embodies the spirit of resistance.

From June 14 to 16, the Soweto Theatre precinct will host a three-day cultural and educational event in honor of the 49th anniversary of this pivotal moment in South Africa’s history, setting the stage for next year’s landmark 50th anniversary.

In a statement, Joburg City Theatres  announced The June 16 uprising in 1976 was a crucial event during the struggle against apartheid, when thousands of students protested against the use of Afrikaans in schools.

The courage shown by young leaders, including Hector Pieterson, continues to inspire activism today. This revival aims to reconnect the youth with the legacy of their predecessors while fostering a renewed commitment to social change.

Dada Morero, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, expressed significance of this event.

“We are reclaiming Soweto’s place as the epicentre of youth activism and creative resistance,” Morero stated. “Sarafina! is more than a musical; it is a reminder of what courage looks like when led by the youth.

At a time when the country is once again at a political crossroads, we invite all generations to reconnect with the values of unity, resistance, and hope.”

The program will include interactive workshops, community-building activities, and youth-led art showcases. Highlights of the event will feature a special outdoor screening of the Sarafina! film and live Amapiano music.

On Youth Day, June 16, attendees can enjoy a forecourt programme filled with music, drumming, dance, and storytelling, culminating in live concert version of Sarafina!

Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO of Joburg City Theatres, affirmed the broader significance of the revival. “This is not just a show, it is a movement,” Nduneni-Ngema remarked.

“By reviving Sarafina! in the heart of Soweto, we are giving voice to a new generation while honouring the legacy of those who came before them.”

The Soweto Theatre precinct will host family-friendly programming from 11am each day, alongside initiatives aimed at ensuring clean and safe environment for visitors.

The site will also benefit from recent upgrades in the surrounding areas, including lighting projects in Braamfontein and environmental beautification efforts.

As Soweto prepares to commemorate this historic event, the revival of Sarafina! serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in South Africa.

The celebration invites all community members to reflect on the past while looking forward to a hopeful future shaped by the courage of today’s youth.
