UK protest crackdown sparks free speech debate amid Israel ties scrutiny

British authorities face mounting criticism after designating activist network Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, with critics calling the move an unprecedented assault on civil liberties.

The group – which targets Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems through nonviolent property damage and sit-ins – claims its actions aim to disrupt military technology supplies to Israel amid ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Elbit, partially owned by the Israeli state, describes employees as “civilian soldiers” while supplying 85% of the Israel Defense Forces land-based military tech.

Over 20 activists were arrested in London this week, including 83-year-old retired priest Sue Parfitt, as part of a coordinated crackdown.

In a statement on Wednesday, Institute for Public Accuracy argues Palestine Action tactics directly oppose violence, stating: “They seek to prevent terror by challenging a key enabler of Israel military campaign – a campaign multiple genocide scholars say meets legal definitions of mass atrocity.” UN reports note Israel blockade has pushed Gaza to famine conditions, with aid convoys repeatedly attacked.

Investigative journalist Dave Lindorff warns the UK now leads Western democracies in eroding protest rights, surpassing even US restrictions.

His recent analysis highlights parallels to his 2018 terrorism watch listing after exposing Pentagon financial fraud, predicting expanded misuse of security laws to silence dissent. Labour

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces accusations of abandoning constitutional protections, with critics arguing the terrorism designation criminalises legitimate opposition to foreign military operations.
