CAPE TOWN, – Nearly 200 civic leaders and activists recently convened for a Women’s Month celebration hosted by community group Shincheonji volunteers, aligning with South Africa’ 2025 national priority of strengthening grassroots economic networks through collaborative action.
The Rooted & Rising High Tea blended spiritual reflection with practical strategy sessions at a packed city venue.
A keynote address from New Heaven New Earth Church of Jesus drew historical parallels between modern challenges and the 1956 Women’s March, urging attendees to “channel ancestral resolve into contemporary solutions” through scriptural unity.
Pastor Shirley Brown framed resilience through interfaith cooperation: “Our shared texts remind us truth-seeking outweighs judgment – love becomes our common economic currency.”
Her remarks preceded a poetry recital symbolising generations of South African women’s struggles.

Economic analysts highlighted unrecognised contributions, with Mosaic Organisation director Chelsea Mamwell noting: “Every trauma survivor supported represents repaired social infrastructure – these emotional networks enable formal markets to function.”
Department of Social Development representative Philisiwe Mthimkulu added: “When women duplicate efforts, they multiply dignity – collective care rebuilds fractured communities.”
Organisers reported 37% attendance growth since the event’s 2022 inception, reflecting heightened demand for platforms addressing intersectional challenges.
Shincheonji Volunteers coordinator Lindiwe Nkosi confirmed expansion plans for next year’s program, which will incorporate skills-exchange workshops based on participant feedback.
The gathering closed with activist Shahieda Martin’s call to “transform monthly symbolism into daily action,” echoing her opening challenge for women to “light paths through persistent barriers.” Shincheonji Volunteers currently oversee 14 community projects across Cape Town, including urban agriculture cooperatives that have trained 860 women in sustainable farming techniques since January.
