Witpoort Police Officer Arrested After Fatal Shooting Sparks Dual Deaths

Ga-Seleka, Limpopo, September 1 – A 48-year-old South African Police Service detective sergeant was detained on Monday following an alleged shooting that left two dead in Botsalanong village, Ga-Seleka outside Lephalale.

The officer, stationed at Witpoort SAPS, reportedly fired at a man during a confrontation at his residence on Sunday evening.

Limpopo police confirmed the man died en route to a local hospital.

His aunt collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene after arriving to investigate the incident, according to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

Preliminary reports indicate the altercation began when the deceased visited the officer’s home looking for him, only to encounter his spouse.

The sergeant arrived later, escalating tensions.

“The exact trigger of the violence remains under investigation,” Col Ledwaba said in a statement, noting murder and inquest cases had been filed.

The officer surrendered to authorities shortly after the shooting and remains in custody.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has assumed oversight of the case, standard procedure for police-involved fatalities.

Community leaders described the village as tense but calm, with IPID investigators combing the scene.

The sergeant’s service firearm was seized as evidence.
