CAPE TOWN, Feb 25 – South Africans expressed frustration and skepticism following Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana 2026 budget speech, highlighting concerns over inadequate allocations and a lack of transparency.
Commenters on social media criticised the government’s approach, with many questioning the effectiveness of the budget in addressing pressing issues.
“Where is the money really going?” asked Nick Marais Reyneke, pointing to a history of opaque budget processes that favor well-connected individuals over the national interest.
Concerns were also raised about the minimal increases in social grants, with Carol Daniels lamenting the R80 rise in the old age grant, stating it does little to alleviate the struggles of pensioners.
“What can they do with an R80 increase? The government could do better towards them,” she said.
Others highlighted the lack of tax relief for pensioners and the absence of support for educational assistants, with Darkjay Papakea questioning the government’s priorities. “No extension for the Educational Assistants?” he remarked.
Critics like Yvette Rmy Khoza pointed out that the R580 child support grant is insufficient, arguing it barely covers basic necessities. “It’s a shame our government doesn’t care about people,” she added.
The overall sentiment reflects a growing demand for greater accountability and transparency in government spending, as citizens call for more substantial reforms to address their needs effectively.
