BOTSHABELO VILLAGE, GA-SELEKA – In a significant investment in human capital and community infrastructure, the Limpopo Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture officially opened the Baphuting Community Library on Monday, framing it as a critical tool to steer youth toward brighter futures.
Limpopo MEC Jerry Maseko presided over the inauguration, which also served as the launchpad for a youth sports initiative distributing equipment to 15 local schools as part of an expanding school league program.
Maseko described the dual-pronged approach as essential for holistic development.
“Our aspiration is to witness every child entering the blessed halls of this institution, now equipped with state-of-the-art computers and free Wi-Fi,” Maseko stated, calling the library a “gateway to knowledge” for the Lephalale community.
He acknowledged security concerns due to the facility’s secluded location and valuable resources, promising robust measures to prevent vandalism and theft, which he linked to societal ills like addiction.
The ceremony took a sobering turn as Waterberg District Executive Mayor Moloko Jack Maeko expanded on these challenges. Reflecting on Human Rights Day, Maeko called for “fearless men and women” to confront pressing issues, naming unemployment as the nation’s primary crisis.
He then delivered a stark warning on intertwined threats of sexual violence and drug abuse.
“The intention is to systematically destroy South Africa,” Maeko alleged, claiming that 80-90% of local spaza shops are foreign-owned and involved in drug sales targeting school children.
He presented a dire prediction, suggesting drug proliferation could alter community demographics by impairing local boys’ health while foreign nationals father children with local girls.
“I am not advocating for vigilantism,” Maeko clarified, urging collaboration with law enforcement. He demanded police serve without compromise or bribery, declaring anyone involved in drug dealing an “enemy of the community.”
Looking ahead, MEC Maseko outlined a broader vision for community development, revealing plans for a multi-purpose community centre and a technical high school in the area.
He urged residents to actively follow up on these proposals with government departments.
The opening of the Baphuting Community Library represents a beacon of hope and resource in Botshabelo.
However, the concurrent dialogue from leadership underscores a complex reality where providing access to knowledge and sport is part of a larger battle against social decay, economic stagnation, and substance abuse threatening the very youth these initiatives aim to uplift.
