Ga-Seleka, April 10, 2026 – The atmosphere was alive with joyful ululations, festive songs, and an overwhelming pride as the Ga-Seleka community assembled at Jimmy Thulare stadium to witness the formal handover of the certificate to Kgosi Gaborone Brains Seleka, now serves as the acting Chief of Baphoting Bo Seleka in Limpopo.
The ceremony, led by Limpopo’s MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, signified a new leadership era following the passing of the previous leader, Kgosi Phetogo David Seleka, in 2021.
During his keynote speech, MEC Makamu underscored the critical need for unity and collaboration between traditional authorities and the government, asserting that sustainable development hinges on cooperative efforts across the community.
He pointed out that traditional leadership remains vital for social harmony and urged the development of robust partnerships focused on effective service delivery, cultural preservation, and the well-being of all citizens.
Kgosi Gaborone Brains Seleka, tasked with overseeing 27 villages, embodies a rich cultural legacy blended with a forward-thinking vision.
Guided by Queen Mother Mma Mmarona Seleka, his leadership is anchored in unity, resilience, and a commitment to uplift and develop the community.
Mananye Seleka, spokesperson for the Royal House, clarified that this was not a coronation or formal inauguration but the official presentation of the certificate to Kgosi Gaborone Seleka as acting chief—the fifth to hold this title since his father’s passing.
He informed Lephalale Express that the essential ritual of placing the leopard skin on Kgosi Gaborone’s shoulders occurred in 2023, confirming that it was not part of this event.
This clarification highlights the intricate history behind the ceremony, particularly ongoing legal disputes within the royal family regarding succession, which is still under judicial review.
“The war isn’t over yet,” the spokesperson stated, discussing the quest for Kgosi Gaborone Seleka to secure a permanent position, but added, “we already have solutions in sight.”
Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor, Aaron Mokgetle, extended a warm welcome to all attendees, including traditional leaders from the province and Botswana, fellow mayors, councilors, and esteemed guests.
He emphasised that this gathering heralds a new era of unity, hope, and progress for the Seleka Traditional Council and the larger Lephalale community.
In his acceptance remarks, Kgosi Gaborone Brains Seleka expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for the trust placed in him.
He urged all stakeholders to unite, affirming that effective leadership thrives when it listens to, serves, and collaborates with the people
