JOHANNESBURG – African National Congress (ANC) endorsed a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report on graft at Tembisa Hospital on Tuesday, calling it a critical step in combating systemic corruption and honouring murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
Party Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the findings demonstrated law enforcement’s resolve to root out malfeasance across government levels.
The report follows a 2021 scandal involving irregular contracts worth millions of rand at the Gauteng hospital, which Deokaran had flagged before her assassination.
“This report pays tribute to Deokaran, ethical civil servants, and whistleblowers driving clean governance,” Mbalula stated, framing the SIU’s work as foundational to building a capable state that serves vulnerable communities.
The ANC did not disclose specific findings but pledged accountability for implicated individuals.
Deokaran, a senior health official, was killed in a 2021 shooting after exposing alleged corruption in the Gauteng Health Department particularly rekared to procurement deals at Tembisa Hospital.
Her death sparked national outrage and renewed calls for whistleblower protections.
The SIU, empowered to recover public funds. The ANC statement comes amid mounting pressure to address graft ahead of 2026 elections, with opposition parties citing slow prosecutions.
