Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) President Velenkosini Hlabisa invoked his movement anti-apartheid legacy on Saturday while pledging “accountable leadership” during a 50th anniversary address to 5,000 supporters at Jabulani Amphitheatre in Soweto. a historic site of resistance activism.
The Cooperative Governance Minister described the venue as “the bedrock of principled opposition” where IFP founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi first challenged apartheid-era education policies and advocated nonviolent resistance in the 1970s.
Hlabisa committed to advancing Buthelezi’s philosophy of “service before politics” through ongoing municipal reforms targeting corruption and infrastructure gaps.
Addressing current governance challenges, Hlabisa called undocumented migration a “national emergency” requiring stricter border controls and an 80% local workforce quota, while pledging stronger gender-based violence protections through proposed legislative amendments.
