Limpopo police are investigating a culpable homicide case after the body of Baaitsi Molimisi (31), the acclaimed Lekompo music producer and performer, known as Dr. Nel, was discovered along Phetogo Drive in Botshabelo Village, Ga-Seleka during early hours on Sunday.
Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene following a passerby report, authorities confirmed.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson, said Dr. Nel had performed hours earlier at a local pub grand opening and that a post-mortem would determine the exact cause of death.
Police stated a post-mortem would determine cause of death and urged witnesses to contact Detective Sergeant Lesiba Tsebe (071 466 6558) or Crime Stop (08600 10111).
Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Funani Nqamane Jerry Maseko, condemned the killing as an “unjust loss of a cultural architect,” highlighting Dr. Nel’s role in shaping the Lekompo genre through chart-topping productions.
Waterberg District Executive Mayor Moloko Maeko echoed the sentiment, calling the artist’s death a “colossal blow to cross-border cultural exchange” and urging swift justice.
Democratic Alliance in Lephalale decried the murder as an attack on the region’s creative sector, while the Forum of Limpopo Entrepreneurs praised Dr. Nel’s “visionary artistry” that “eternally enriched our cultural fabric.”
No suspects have been identified as of Tuesday, with police continuing to appeal for public assistance.
