In a bold strategic move to enhance its operational independence and solidify its position in the mining industry, Ndalamo Resources announced on Thursday acquisition of Wonderfontein Coal Mine in Mpumalanga from Umsimbithi Mining (Pty).
The company said the acquisition marks significant milestone for Ndalamo as Wonderfontein becomes the company’s first wholly owned operating mine.
Originally owned by Lithemba Wonderfontein Coal, Phembani Group, and Glencore joint venture, Ndalamo Resources is optimistic Wonderfontein Coal Mine has rich history dating back to its establishment as underground mine in 2012.
Transitioning to fully opencast truck-and-shovel operation in 2013, the mine was officially commissioned as opencast coal mine and wash plant in 2014.
“With a peak mining rate of 4.2 million tonnes per annum and an expected life of mine up to 2030, Wonderfontein is a valuable asset that positions Ndalamo for long-term growth and success in the coal sector,” said Ndalamo Chief Executive Officer, Shammy Luvhengo.
Luvhengo expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating it aligns with Ndalamo’s commitment to sustainable and profitable mining practices, free from the constraints of joint ventures.
He emphasised that acquisition strengthens Ndalamo’s portfolio and marks a significant milestone in the company’s growth and diversification strategy.
While coal will remain core business for Ndalamo, Luvhengo mentioned that the company is also focused on diversifying into new commodities and alternate energies.
Luvhengo disclosed that Wonderfontein acquisition underscores Ndalamo’s dedication to creating sustainable value for its stakeholders and contributing positively to the environment.
“As we advance, we will continue to act responsibly towards our people, communities, and the environment. We are enthusiastic about the opportunities this acquisition brings and are dedicated to fostering resilient and socially responsible business that aligns with our long-term vision,” concluded Luvhengo.
