Last updated on 2025-04-15

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mcebisi Jonas as his Special Envoy to the United States, tasked with advancing South Africa’s diplomatic, trade, and bilateral priorities.

Jonas was appointed as Special  Envoy following the return of  Ephraim Rasool  recently fired as South African Ambassador to the US and declared persona non grata by the Trump administration.

As a former Deputy Finance Minister, Jonas brings extensive governmental experience to his new role. He will lead negotiations, foster strategic partnerships, and engage with US government officials and private-sector leaders to promote South Africa’s interests.

Jonas appointment draws from his proven track record as one of Ramaphosa four Presidential Investment Envoys since 2018.

Jonas will also maintain his position as Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the MTN Group.

President Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of the relationship between South Africa and the US, committing to rebuild and maintain ties based on mutual respect and benefit.

With decades of experience, Jonas is well-suited to navigate the complexities of this strategic partnership.
