In a groundbreaking achievement for both environmental sustainability and economic growth, President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially enacted Climate Change Act, 2024.
Set to take effect on March 17, 2025, this landmark legislation aims to guide South Africa towards low-carbon economy, paving the way for greener and more sustainable future.
In a statement on Monday, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister, Dr. Dion George expressed his enthusiasm following the Act proclamation, underscoring its critical role in addressing urgent need for impactful climate action.
He emphasised that the Act is not only pivotal in shaping an effective response to climate change but also in establishing resilient and inclusive green economy that looks ahead.
The Climate Change Act is designed to foster innovation, enhance job creation, and encourage development of sustainable industries, including renewable energy, eco-tourism, and sustainable agriculture.
“We are committed to ensuring climate action becomes catalyst for driving economic growth and building a sustainable future for South Africa,” stated Dr. George.
While the Act is now officially in place, certain provisions will be implemented at later date as the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment works on developing necessary regulations.
Draft regulations are currently being finalised and will soon be made available for public input.
As South Africa navigates growing environmental and economic challenges, Climate Change Act offers crucial framework ensuring thriving and sustainable future for all citizens.
Dr. George reassured the public that his department remains dedicated to fulfilling its responsibilities and will keep citizens informed about comprehensive implementation of this pivotal legislation.
