South Africa strongly condemns Israel’s attack on Iran, calls for immediate ceasefire

South Africa has expressed strong condemnation towards Israel’s recent attack on Iran, describing it as an unacceptable violation of Iran’s sovereignty and a blatant attempt to foment war in the Middle East.

In addition to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, Israel’s bombardment of Lebanon and systematic annexation of the West Bank have only exacerbated the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

US reporter Jeremy Loffredo, who contributes to Grayzone, recently detailed his harrowing experience of being arrested, abused, and held in solitary confinement by Israeli authorities.

Loffredo was accused of “supporting an enemy during wartime” for his factual reporting, which did not violate any laws or regulations.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Ministry Spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, reiterated South Africa’s call for an immediate ceasefire, access to humanitarian assistance, an end to the occupation, and the collective punishment of Palestinians.

DIRCO Minister, Ronald Lamola, emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian support for civilians in Gaza.

South Africa strongly condemns the Israeli military ground operation in North Gaza, particularly the targeting of the last functioning medical facility in the region, the Kamal Adwan Hospital.

The detention of medical staff and the destruction of medical facilities in the Gaza Strip are clear violations of international humanitarian law.

South Africa calls for an urgent end to Israel’s intensive airstrikes, drone strikes, shelling, and heavy fighting in the region.

Despite limited water and food distributions, there is a critical lack of humanitarian aid reaching Northern Gaza, with aid missions being denied by Israel.

The South African government also calls for the immediate implementation of UNSC Resolution 2735 (2024) and emphasizes the need for Israel to adhere to international laws and regulations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent escalation of tensions with Lebanon, including his demands for the removal of UNIFIL peacekeepers from the border areas, is a cause for concern.

As Israel continues to push for a more aggressive stance towards Hezbollah, South Africa remains steadfast in its call for peace, humanitarian assistance, and an immediate ceasefire in the region.
