JOHANNESBURG — Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) retained its market dominance in October, selling 13,559 vehicles and capturing 24.2% of South Africa total new vehicle sales of 55,956 units, according to Naamsa data released on Tuesday.
The passenger car segment surged to 39,610 units — its strongest October since 2014 — marking a 14.8% annual increase. Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) rose 23.9%, while medium commercial vehicles grew 9.3%. Heavy truck sales dipped 1.0%, reflecting uneven demand in freight sectors.
“Our performance across entry-level to luxury segments underscores customer trust,” said TSAM Senior VP Leon Theron, citing improved consumer confidence and a stronger rand as key drivers. Industry-wide sales rose 16% year-on-year despite moderating growth from September.
Key Drivers
Passenger Cars: Toyota led with 8,432 units sold, anchored by the Corolla Cross (1,615), Starlet (1,613), and Urban Cruiser (1,360). Lexus moved 79 luxury vehicles, led by the NX SUV (31 units).
LCVs: The Hilux dominated with 3,533 units sold (27.9% market share), followed by the Hiace Taxi (617) and Land Cruiser 79 Pick-up (414).
Fleet Demand: Over 2,150 fleet customers chose Toyota models, with the Hilux and Starlet leading corporate orders.
Export Momentum
TSAM exported 4,436 vehicles in October, while its parts division shipped 393,259 components globally and supplied over 2 million pieces domestically.
The performance aligns with Naamsa broader outlook for a resilient auto sector amid economic headwinds.
Theron credited TSAM dealer network and value-chain partners for sustaining momentum ahead of year-end sales campaigns.
