South Africa ultimate braai showdown is heating up as Shoprite and Checkers call on sausage savants to enter the 33rd annual Championship Boerewors competition.
If your boerewors recipe has earned you nicknames like “Grill Sergeant” or “Braaian Reynolds,” submit your finest creation by 20 June 2025 for a shot at winning a Toyota Fortuner worth R705,800 and nationwide fame as your recipe hits store shelves.
This iconic contest, celebrating South Africa’s braai culture and culinary heritage, has crowned legends since 1992. Last year alone, over 6 million kilograms of Championship Boerewors—enough for 56 million rolls—fired up gatherings nationwide.
“Becoming Boerewors Champion was unforgettable,” says 2024 winner Ruard Briel, who plans to defend his title. “They treated us like royalty… it’s about joining a legacy.”
Aspiring champions must prove mastery of every step: blending spices, processing meat, stuffing sausages, and perfecting the cook.
Entries face rigorous vetting by culinary experts from the South African Chefs Association, with only 30 recipes advancing to initial judging.
The top 10 finalists then battle it out in a live cook-off, where judges seek the ideal balance of snap, flavor, and tradition.
Beyond bragging rights, the 2025 champion drives off in a Fortuner and pockets R20,000 cash.
Second place earns R50,000, while third takes R30,000—a sizzling incentive for grillers to turn up the heat.
With entries closing soon, the race is on to claim a slice of South Africa’s tastiest legacy.
