Feeling low this February? Hormones might be the culprit

As the excitement of the new year fades, many people experience fatigue instead of the expected energy boost.

Experts suggest that hormonal changes, particularly declining testosterone in men and reduced estrogen and progesterone in women, may be significant factors behind this mid-year slump.

Ingrid Singels, Associate Director of Pharma Dynamics’ Scientific Division, explains that sex hormones are crucial for maintaining energy, mood, and muscle strength.

Low testosterone in men is linked to reduced muscle mass and fatigue, while declining estrogen during menopause can lead to sleep disturbances and cognitive fog.

“Hormones regulate more than reproduction; they support the systems that keep us feeling strong,” says Singels.

Symptoms of hormonal imbalance include persistent tiredness, mood swings, and decreased exercise capacity.

Singels emphasises the importance of consulting healthcare providers if fatigue persists, as underlying hormonal issues may often be overlooked.

For men, testosterone levels can be assessed through a morning blood test, while women require a more comprehensive evaluation that considers age, symptoms, and medical history.

Singels advocates for regular mid-life checkups to monitor hormonal changes and overall health.

Lifestyle modifications can also help manage hormonal fluctuations. Regular exercise, prioritizing sleep, managing stress, and maintaining a balanced diet are essential for stabilizing hormone levels.

Singels encourages small, consistent changes to enhance well-being and combat the February slump, reminding individuals that with the right approach, they can regain energy and vitality as the year progresses.
