ActionSA reveals DA Ministers in GNU use blue-light luxury SUVs despite claims of modesty

In a shocking revelation, ActionSA has uncovered that Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, now Government of National Unity (GNU) Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, is enjoying the perks of multiple blue-light luxury SUVs, including an Audi Q7, BMW X5, and Toyota Prado, each with a purchase price exceeding R1 million.

This discovery contradicts the repeated claims made by DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille that no DA Minister makes use of blue lights.

Steenhuisen’s own written reply to ActionSA’s Parliamentary Question confirms that each of his luxury SUVs are “fitted with blue lights and the appropriate signalling systems.”

Despite trying to project the image of travelling in a modest Toyota Cross, Steenhuisen’s reply exposes the truth that he actually has a fleet of three blue-light luxury SUVs.

ActionSA said this lavish display of luxury vehicles by Ministers in the GNU is emblematic of the extravagant lifestyle afforded to those in power, while the South African Police Service struggles to equip police stations with basic vehicles to combat escalating violent crime.

According to ActionSA Parliamentary Leader, Dereleen James, the partnership between the ANC and DA in the GNU seems to be more about securing cushy cabinet positions and perks rather than implementing real reforms. Ministers and Deputy Ministers, accompanied by large staff complements, are frequently jet-setting internationally at the expense of taxpayers.

ActonSA is committed to ending this profligate travel and putting a stop to the unchecked extravagance enjoyed by the partners in the grand coalition.

The daily poverty experienced by millions of South Africans is starkly contrasted with the flashy cars and excessive spending of those in power.

“It is clear that the GNU operates more like a government of jet-setters than a humble and caring one, with DA Ministers contributing to this culture of excess. The hypocrisy of preaching against wasteful expenditure while indulging in luxury at the expense of taxpayers cannot go unchallenged,” added James.
