BRICS countries to drive nuclear energy growth by 2030

In a groundbreaking development, the BRICS nations are poised to take center stage in the global nuclear energy landscape, with experts predicting that two-thirds of the world’s nuclear energy growth will come from these countries by 2030.

The surge in nuclear energy production is driven by the increasing demand for electricity and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.

BRICS member states – including Russia, South Africa, Ethiopia, China, Brazil, Iran, and Bolivia – came together for the inaugural meeting of the Nuclear Energy Platform.

Top executives from leading nuclear companies and organizations attended the meeting to discuss initiatives and outline future plans.

The 2024 BRICS summit is the sixteenth annual summit, currently taking place in Kazan, Russia, from 22 to 24 October 2024.

In statement on Thursday, Rosatom Director General, Alexey Likhachev, highlighted the technological advances made by BRICS countries in the field of nuclear energy.

“Practically all the states of the association are implementing projects in the field of nuclear energy,” Likhachev stated.

He emphasised the importance of sharing expertise and best practices among BRICS nations to drive nuclear energy growth.

BRICS countries currently have 390 GW of operating nuclear power units and an additional 66 GW under construction.

By 2050, these nations are expected to account for half of global energy generation and consumption, with nuclear power playing a pivotal role in meeting energy demands.

African nations are also embracing nuclear energy, with South Africa’s Koeberg Nuclear Power Station already operational.

Other African countries, such as Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan, are actively exploring nuclear energy options and establishing ties with Rosatom.

The Nuclear Energy Platform aims to promote best practices, advanced nuclear technologies, and incentives for nuclear projects in BRICS member countries.

As the world shifts towards sustainable energy sources, nuclear energy is emerging as a critical component of national energy systems, offering a low-carbon, safe, reliable, and cost-effective solution.

With the BRICS nations leading the way, the future of nuclear energy looks bright as we move towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy.
