Court sentences man to 40 years for housebreaking, robbery, and rape

The Polokwane High Court has sentenced  David Zamikhaya Mbungendlu 23, to forty years in prison after he was found guilty of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, aggravated robbery, and rape.

 The sentencing was handed down on Monday.

The court heard on December 2,2022, at around 3:30 am, the accused forcibly entered a house by opening a window. 

Inside, he confronted a 76-year-old woman in the bathroom before demanding money. 

The victim complied and handed over a handbag, which the accused searched and found R400. 

He then proceeded to push the victim onto the bed, strangle her, and rape her.

Before leaving the scene, the accused also demanded the house keys from the victim.
The incident was reported to the police, resulting in the opening of a case at Vaalwater police  for housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, aggravated robbery, and rape. 

The case was later transferred to Modimolle Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses branch in October.
