The Democratic Alliance (DA) has secured a decisive victory in the highly contested Ward 3 by-election in Lephalale, solidifying its presence in the region.
Nearly 2000 votes were cast in the by-election, with the DA emerging triumphant.
According to DA Provincial Leader Lindy Wilson, the win can be attributed to the party’s commitment to transparent service delivery.
“The people of Lephalale have demonstrated their trust in a party with a proven track record of delivering services effectively,” Wilson stated.
The by-election was necessitated by Nico Pienaar’s appointment to the National Council of Provinces, following the impressive 2024 National and Provincial Elections results. Pienaar, who was voted in as mayor in 2022 with nine votes, received support from three African National Congress (ANC) councillors who broke ranks to vote with the DA.
Newly elected councillor,JD Nel, 27, has been wished well by Wilson, who expressed confidence in his ability to serve the ward with distinction.
Nel has a track record of community involvement, having tackled issues such as overbilling and service delivery, including refuse removal.
The official results of the by-election are:
- Democratic Alliance (DA): 813 votes
- African National Congress (ANC): 576 votes
- Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF): 557 votes
- African Transformation Movement (ATM): 27 votes

“With this victory, the DA reinforces its reputation as a party dedicated to accountable governance and service delivery. service,” added Wilson
