Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for an external investigation into the theft of Caterpillar grader from Molemole Local Municipality, expressing serious concerns about circumstances surrounding the incident.
The grader, purchased by municipality for R4.5 million in December 2024, was reported stolen on March 17, 2025.
Despite being found in Northwest province within 24 hours, DA councilor Calvin Matje raised alarm bells about the theft, citing it was stolen while three security guards were on duty at Ramokgopa stadium.
According to Matje, a man wearing municipal overalls was allegedly handed keys to the grader before loading it onto a municipal-branded flatbed and driving off.
The grader is fitted with password and tracker, raising questions about how it was easily stolen.
This is not an isolated incident, Matje highlighted, saying previous theft occurred in December 2023 where TLB and roller machine worth R3 million were stolen from the Morebeng, Soekmekaar satellite offices.
“Three officials were arrested after it was determined to be an inside job,” said Matje.
Molemole, being small rural municipality, relies heavily on its fleet for service delivery, particularly gravel roads maintenance.
Matje emphasised the need for stronger processes to safeguard municipal assets, stating DA will continue to speak out against crimes that affect taxpayers and hinder service delivery.
The DA call for external investigation into theft of the Caterpillar grader sends clear message that accountability and transparency must be maintained in local municipalities to prevent such incidents from happening.
