DA files complaint against Speaker for corruption allegations

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has taken bold and decisive action in the face of shocking corruption allegations against National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

According to DA Chief Whip Siviwe Gwarube, the party’s unwavering dedication to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency has led them to officially file a complaint with the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests.

Gwarube stressed the crucial role of the Speaker of the National Assembly in leading the legislative branch of the government.

“The fact that she is embroiled in these allegations not only jeopardizes the credibility of Parliament, but also hinders its ability to effectively hold the executive branch accountable,” she said.

The DA cannot sit idly by and allow the already fragile trust between South Africans and Parliament to be further eroded by those who fail to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

As a party dedicated to fighting corruption, the DA is committed to ensuring that those in public office uphold the highest ethical standards.

Gwarube emphasised the detrimental effects of corruption on our democracy and the erosion of public trust in our institutions.

Therefore, it is imperative that any allegations of corruption are thoroughly investigated and the responsible parties are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

“We urge the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests to swiftly, fairly, and comprehensively investigate these allegations. The integrity of our parliamentary institutions and the trust of the South African people hang in the balance, making it imperative that this matter is treated with the utmost gravity and urgency,” Gwarube stated.

She vowed DA would continue to closely monitor developments and advocate for transparency, accountability, and integrity in public office, as they believe these are crucial pillars of a functioning democracy.
