The Democratic Alliance (DA) has conducted an oversight investigation into the water crisis in Lephalale, revealing shocking incompetence by a contractor appointed to replace old asbestos water pipes.
According to DA Caucus Leader Sybil Niewoudt, the contractor failed to install a stable bypass line, leaving Ward 13 without water since the project’s commencement.
Niewoudt stated, “Our oversight revealed sub-standard wire connections and a replacement water pipe that was too small to allow for adequate water flow.” Despite municipal interventions, water provision remains unrestored.
The water crisis has severe consequences for Lephalale, with the local high school and businesses forced to close. Medupi workers are also unable to work due to lack of clean protective wear.
Residents’ attempts to contact the ANC ward councillor have been ignored, prompting the municipality to dispatch water tankers and appoint a new contractor.
Niewoudt vowed, “The DA will demand full disclosure from the municipal manager on the contractor’s appointment, whose incompetency has left large parts of the town without water for 5 consecutive days and counting.”
