Durban, August 31, 2025: – A bombshell suspension has exposed a South African police constable moonlighting as a political activist and a shadowy security tycoon – all while wearing the badge.
KwaZulu-Natal top cop, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, dropped the hammer Sunday after explosive evidence emerged of the Ntambanana-based officer flouting two cardinal SAPS rules: no politics, no private security gigs.
The unnamed constable – now barred from duty – was seen allegedly decked in partisan regalia, chanting slogans that left colleagues gobsmacked.
But the plot thickened: whistleblowers allege the same cop runs a clandestine protection firm, a direct violation of SAPS’ ironclad ban on officers profiting from the security sector.
“This isn’t just a uniform violation – it’s a betrayal of trust,” fumed Mkhwanazi, referring the case to PSIRA, the watchdog that licenses private security cops.
SAPS regulations scream it in bold: cops must stay neutral and avoid side hustles in booze, taxis, or – you guessed it – security.
