Fake degree fells safety official in Gqeberha fraud bust

Eastern Cape Government official faces fraud charges after authorities uncovered forged university degree she submitted to secure high-level position.

The 51-year-old  Department of Community Safety Deputy Director was arrested at her Gqeberha home on Thursday following a months-long probe by provincial fraud investigators.

Police confirmed the suspect submitted counterfeit Vista University credentials during her 2022 hiring process.

Forensic document experts exposed the fabrication after routine verification checks, triggering immediate legal action.

Captain Hazel Mqala of the Eastern Cape SAPS confirmed the swift arrest and same-day court appearance at Zwelitsha Magistrates Court.

Released on R2000 bail, the accused will answer charges of fraud, forgery, and document fraud at East London Regional Court on August 18.

The case highlights growing concerns about qualification fraud in South Africa public sector, with prosecutors vowing to pursue maximum penalties for integrity breaches.
