Former Umkhonto we Sizwe party Secretary General, Floyd Shivambu, recently revealed his shocking dismissal from the party leadership during a media briefing for his new political initiative.
Shivambu announced his exit stemmed from unfounded allegations linked to a fabricated intelligence report.
The press conference, held on June 19, highlighted internal strife within the organisation and raised serious concerns about its direction.
On June 3, Shivambu was informed of his removal following a meeting of Umkhonto we Sizwe’s leadership.
While officials indicated he would be reassigned to the National Assembly, they forbade members from discussing the reasons for his removal.
“It seems some people could not resist the urge to distort the facts,” Shivambu remarked, emphasizing the need to address the real issues at stake.
He asserted that the official rationale for his ousting involved accusations of plotting to overthrow President Jacob Zuma within the party.
The crux of Shivambu’s claims revolved around a dubious intelligence report that allegedly detailed his conversations about raising funds to unseat Zuma and even invoked supernatural powers to eliminate opponents.
“This report was rejected with contempt; it is complete rubbish,” he stated. He invited the leadership to inspect his phone for evidence, asserting, “There is nothing I do privately that I cannot own up to publicly.”
In the aftermath of his removal, Shivambu criticised party leadership for being swayed by opportunistic advisors around President Zuma.
He accused them of mismanaging party funds, claiming as much as R7 million was being withdrawn monthly from Umkhonto we Sizwe coffers.
“These actions risk deregistering the party,” he warned.
Throughout his tenure, Shivambu emphasised his commitment to building strong organisational structures and fostering unity among various factions within Umkhonto we Sizwe.
He described his efforts in drafting foundational documents and formalising relationships with affiliated organisations as commendable.
Yet, he expressed frustration over the internal sabotage he faced from those who wished to undermine his work.
Shivambu, who served as Deputy President of the Economic Freedom Fighters, said he learned more about politics in his time with Umkhonto we Sizwe than he did in a decade with the EFF.
He expressed deep respect for President Zuma while lamenting the influence of deceitful individuals in the party.
“I joined Umkhonto because I believed in protecting the legacy of President Zuma’s politics,” he stated.
Following his dismissal, Shivambu has received support from various South Africans who have discouraged him from joining either the ANC or EFF, citing their perceived flaws.
He agreed, labeling the ANC as directionless and the EFF as cult-like, highlighting the need for Umkhonto we Sizwe to address its own shortcomings.
In conclusion, Shivambu’s departure from Umkhonto we Sizwe marks a significant moment for the organization, drawing attention to leadership struggles and issues of integrity within the party.
As he embarks on a new political journey, it remains to be seen how these developments will influence South Africa political landscape.
