Foreign nationals nabbed smuggling illicit products at Groblersburg border post

In a recent bust at Groblersburg border post near Tomburke outside Lephalale in Limpopo, two male suspects, aged 38 and 42, were arrested for attempting to smuggle illicit goods into the country.

The suspects – both foreign nationals were driving a white freightliner truck with Gauteng registration, were intercepted by a vigilant customs official at the import arrival gate.

According to police reports, the customs official uncovered a hidden stash of illicit goods, including cigarettes, facial creams, and tablets, among the precious stones declared on the truck.

The suspects attempted to bribe police officer with R20,000.00, but their efforts were thwarted, and the authorities were immediately alerted.

During the operation, police confiscated a massive haul comprising 45 boxes containing an impressive 2,250 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes, with a staggering estimated value of R 606,510.00.

These cigarettes, believed to be illicitly imported, raise serious concerns regarding unfair competition and public health.

In addition to the tobacco products, authorities uncovered extra clear creams, Epiderm facial cream, and Appeti tablets.

The unknown ingredients in these products may pose significant health risks to consumers.

Perhaps most striking is the seizure of an International Truck and Trailer, valued at R 1,100,000.00, believed to be used for transporting these illegal goods.

The operation underscores not just the volume of products confiscated but the potential organized effort behind this smuggling ring.

The suspects appeared before court on charges of smuggling illicit goods on December 18, 2024.

The Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the customs official and SAPS members for their swift action in combating illicit trade and ensuring the safety of the community.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance required to prevent illegal activities at our borders.

It also underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in tackling transnational crime and protecting our society from the harmful effects of illicit goods.
