United Nations (UN) Security Council heard alarming warnings that the Two-State Solution for Israel and Palestine is critically endangered.
In a statement following Wednesday meeting, in which senior UN officials called for urgent humanitarian aid in Gaza, while Israeli and Palestinian representatives traded accusations of politicising relief efforts.
UN Special Coordinator Sigrid Kaag described a harrowing reality: Palestinians now say “see you in heaven” instead of farewells.
She condemned Israel strikes on civilians and infrastructure since March ceasefire collapsed, stressing that aid “cannot be negotiable.”
While acknowledging Israel security needs after the October 7 attacks, Kaag demanded immediate release of hostages and an end to Hamas rocket fire.
She warned that peace must be permanent, not transactional, and decried Israel “de facto annexation” of West Bank land through settlements and violence.
Feroze Sidhwa, a U.S. trauma surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, shared graphic accounts of treating children with shrapnel wounds and pregnant women with catastrophic injuries.
“I did not see single combatant,” he testified, blaming Israel for systematically dismantling Gaza healthcare system.
He urged the Council to demand ceasefire and halt arms transfers, citing reports that nearly half of Gaza children are suicidal.
Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour broke down while describing mothers clutching dead children.
He accused Israel of using starvation and aid as “weapons of war” and referenced inflammatory statements by Israeli leaders.
Israel representative countered that 170 aid trucks entered Gaza recently, with new distribution centres ensuring supplies reach civilians—not Hamas.
He accused UN of sabotaging these efforts by excluding NGOs that cooperate with Israel.
The U.S. backed Israel right to self-defense but called for collaboration with the newly formed “Gaza Heritage Foundation” for aid delivery.
Multiple Council members condemned the killing of Israeli embassy staff in Washington and voiced support for UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths after Israeli accusations of antisemitism.
Chaos at a Gaza aid distribution centre highlighted crisis, with the UK urging Israel to “let aid in now.” Russia, Panama, and others cited the incident as proof that Israel aid framework is failing.
Arab states condemned Israel “militarisation of aid,” while Algeria mourned 18,000 Palestinian children killed: “Their deaths were not collateral … but deliberate.”
Sierra Leone invoked past global failures in Rwanda and Srebrenica, stressing that preventing genocide is mandatory.
China warned that Israel control of 70% of Gaza and West Bank settlement expansions are eroding the two-State solution.
Most Council members endorsed an upcoming June Saudi-France peace conference, with Pakistan warning: “History will not absolve those who delay justice in the face of genocide.”
