Global outcry intensifies over Gaza crisis as coalition seeks UN-led protection force

Israeli strikes killed 134 Palestinians in Gaza during a 24-hour period, according to AntiWar.com, as global condemnation escalates over Tel Aviv military campaign.

The outlet also reported former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stark criticism of Israel plan to build a so-called “humanitarian city” in Gaza, which he equated to a concentration camp.

AntiWar.com noted a funeral was held for an American citizen fatally shot by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, underscoring rising violence beyond Gaza’s borders.

The Hague Group—co-chaired by South Africa and Colombia—will host an emergency summit this week to be attended by Spain, Ireland, Turkey, Portugal, China, Qatar, and others to finalise punitive measures against Israel.

Middle East Eye reported the coalition aims to impose trade restrictions and diplomatic penalties, with discussions set to address accountability for alleged war crimes.

Raed Jarrar of DAWN, founded by assassinated journalist Jamal Khashoggi urged summit participants to back a petition demanding the UN General Assembly deploy an armed multinational force to Gaza under the 1956 Uniting for Peace framework.

The mechanism, last used during the Suez Crisis, would bypass Security Council vetoes to authorise civilian protection, humanitarian aid delivery, and war crimes evidence preservation.

Jarrar criticised nations continuing trade with Israel: “If Brazil and China reject sanctions, they must at least support a protection force to halt this genocide. Grassroots efforts like the Freedom Flotilla aid ships are vital, but states cannot outsource their legal obligations.”

In a statement, Institute for Public Accuracy emphasised the petition grounding in international law, stating Israel actions “betray the UN’s mission to prevent war and uphold human dignity.”

The proposed force would also assist displaced families in returning home and initiate reconstruction.

The summit unfolds amid Gaza death toll surpassing 40,000, with hospitals overwhelmed and UN agencies warning of famine.

Olmert concentration camp analogy and the West Bank killing of an American citizen has further galvanised calls for urgent intervention, as diplomatic channels strain under the weight of escalating violence.
