The court was presented with evidence detailing the events of November 5, 2020, when the two accused violently attacked a 21-year-old male at a tavern in Marapong township, Lephalale.

During the altercation, the young victim was stabbed with a bottle, causing severe injuries to his upper body.

Despite his efforts to seek refuge at his father’s nearby home, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries just steps from the door.

Adding to the heinous nature of the crime, as the victim’s father attempted to assess the situation outside, Matlhatse and John menacingly drove toward him with the clear intention of causing harm. Fortunately, he was able to evade their vehicle, and the perpetrators fled the scene.

Sergeant Nndwamato Mambo of the Lephalale Detective Unit was tasked with leading the investigation.

Thanks to diligent police work, the accused were apprehended on the same day of the incident. Following their arrest, they were granted bail on December 20, 2020, set at R5000 each.

The court proceedings concluded with Monene Lucky Matlhatse receiving a 15-year sentence for murder and an additional 3 years for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH). His sentences will run concurrently.

Meanwhile, Majadibodu Ramadubu John was sentenced to 3 years in prison for assault with intent to inflict GBH.

The ruling has been well-received by community members and law enforcement alike.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “We appreciate the efforts displayed by the investigating officer and everyone who participated in the case until the court sentenced the perpetrators.”

This case underscores the justice system’s commitment to addressing violent crimes and delivering justice to victims and their families.
