U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described unprecedented progress in ending the Russia-Ukraine war during a Monday interview with Fox News, citing a landmark meeting between President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and seven European leaders.
Rubio emphasised that the gathering marked the first tangible movement toward peace after three years of stalemate, with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and European Union (EU) representatives acknowledging a shift in dynamics.
The Trump administration has pivoted from direct financial and military aid to Ukraine toward facilitating weapon sales funded by European allies through NATO.
Rubio noted this strategy aims to bolster Ukraine long-term defense capabilities while reducing U.S. expenditures.
He confirmed discussions on post-conflict security guarantees, likening potential agreements to U.S. alliances with South Korea and Japan, and revealed plans for a historic face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While territorial disputes remain a critical hurdle, Rubio declined to disclose specifics, stressing the need for private negotiations.
He acknowledged concessions would be required from both sides but expressed confidence in Trump’s unique ability to mediate, citing the President’s six successful conflict resolutions since taking office.
A potential three-way summit involving Trump, Zelenskyy, and Putin could follow initial talks, though Rubio cautioned that timelines remain fluid.
The Secretary closed by highlighting Zelenskyy symbolic shift to formal attire during negotiations, framing it as a subtle gesture toward diplomacy.
Trump role as the sole leader capable of bridging divides between Moscow and Kyiv was repeatedly underscored, with Rubio urging bipartisan recognition of the administration peace-driven agenda.
