The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, Xola Nqola, has expressed satisfaction with the appointment of retired Constitutional Court Judge Sisi Khampepe as the head of the judicial commission of inquiry.
This commission will investigate whether there were any efforts to obstruct the investigation and prosecution of crimes committed during the apartheid era.
In a statement on Friday, Nqola commended the government for taking this step, noting that it shows a sense of urgency in addressing the concerns of survivors and families of the victims.
“This is indeed a positive step. Too many families and survivors of apartheid-era crimes have been waiting for justice for far too long,” said Nqola.
The allegations of interference with the investigation and prosecution of these crimes have been circulating for years, making the establishment of this commission a crucial development.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that Judge Khampepe will lead the commission, with assistance from retired Northern Cape Judge President Frans Diale Kgomo and Advocate Andrea Gabriel SC.
The judicial commission of inquiry to investigate delays in the investigation and prosecution of apartheid-era crimes will begin working soon.
South African Human Rights Commission announced the commission was established on May 29, 2025.
The commission is expected to complete its work within six months from the date of its proclamation and submit its report within 60 days of completing its work.
Nqola highlighted that the establishment of the commission is a result of a settlement agreement reached in court discussions initiated by the families of the victims of apartheid-era crimes.
The Portfolio Committee has been actively engaging with the National Prosecuting Authority to monitor the progress of prosecuting matters related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
The committee received positive updates earlier this month, leading to a resolution to closely follow the commitments made by all stakeholders involved.
Nqola affirmed the committee dedication to ensuring that justice is served without unnecessary obstruction.
