DURBAN — KwaZulu-Natal police issued a stern warning against fabricated crime reports on Tuesday after a 26-year-old woman was charged with perjury for inventing a kidnapping story involving a nonexistent infant, while a second woman faces similar charges for falsely accusing her uncle of rape.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, provincial police spokesperson, said the first suspect claimed three men abducted her “three-month-old baby” in Melmoth, KwaMagwaza area on September 13.
A multi-unit search operation revealed she had never given birth, having lied to her boyfriend family about a pregnancy and to her own relatives about a miscarriage.
In a separate case, a 21-year-old woman allegedly falsely testified that her uncle raped her in Madadeni.
The accused uncle remains in custody for an unrelated rape of his 15-year-old niece. Both women are scheduled to appear in magistrate courts today (Tuesday).
“False reports drain resources meant for genuine victims,” said Netshiunda, noting it was the second perjury case this month. “Time spent chasing imaginary crimes steals from preventing real ones.”
