Democratic Alliance in Limpopo has endorsed an urgent probe into claims that provincial legislature Speaker’s office purchased two luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicles totaling R6.5 million.
DA Provincial legislature spokesperson Advocate Franco Marx confirmed his party support for the investigation, citing City Press exposé on Sunday revealing acquisition of a R2.5 million Mercedes-Benz GLC and a R4 million GLC Coupé.
“Allegations of this scale demand immediate scrutiny,” Marx stated, condemning the reported purchases as financially reckless given South Africa fragile economic state.
His remarks follow Parliament turbulent adoption of a national budget after three failed attempts, highlighting systemic fiscal instability.
Marx lambasted the timing of the expenditure as “morally indefensible,” arguing it highlights a stark disconnect between lawmakers and citizens grappling with austerity measures.
“Authorising luxury vehicles amid this crisis isn’t just tone-deaf—it’s a betrayal of public trust,” he asserted.
The DA plans to submit formal written questions to the legislature to dissect the rationale behind the spending.
Marx vowed relentless oversight of the investigation, stressing the need for “full transparency” to justify such excess in an era of tightened belts.
