Limpopo pastor gets life for raping teens after Church sermons

In a heart-wrenching case that has shaken Limpopo community, Pastor Confidence Monyela, 39, has been sentenced to life in prison for multiple rapes of young girls aged between 14 and 17.

Naphuno Magistrate’s Court delivered  verdict on Thursday, July 31, 2025, following a series of horrific incidents that took place between 2016 and 2017 in Maake policing area.

The allegations against Monyela were brought to light when one of the victims bravely approached social worker in August 2017.

This courageous step led to the involvement of local authorities.

Limpopo Police Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed  Monyela lured his victims to his church under the guise of offering spiritual guidance.

Once there, he prayed with them before committing heinous acts. The pastor reportedly threatened the girls, warning them  the Holy Spirit would harm them if they spoke out about the abuse.

Following the report, the Maake police opened five cases of rape. Quick action led to Monyela’s arrest, thanks to the diligent work of the police Tracking Team.

Sergeant Klaas Milonga from Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit was assigned to investigate  disturbing claims.

During court proceedings, Monyela was initially granted R15,000 bail.

However, that fleeting freedom ended when the court imposed a series of severe sentences for his crimes.

The court handed down life imprisonment for two counts of rape, while three other counts netted him an additional ten years each, and one count of sexual assault received a five-year sentence.

Under South African law, the shorter sentences will run concurrently with the life sentences, ensuring  Monyela will remain incarcerated for the rest of his life.

Victims of sexual violence and their advocates have expressed a mixture of relief and outrage. “It is essential that justice is served to protect our children from predators,” said community activists.

“This case is a powerful reminder that we must continue to speak out against such abuses.”

In addition to the prison sentences, Monyela has been declared unfit to possess a firearm, further ensuring that he will not pose a threat to the community. The sentence has sparked renewed discussions about the protection of minors and the responsibility of communities to safeguard their youth from potential harm.

As this case closes, it opens  broader dialogue about the importance of vigilance and support for survivours of abuse. The community is left to grapple with the impact of Monyela actions, while the victims begin their long journey toward healing.
