Limpopo police bust massive cigarette smuggling operation at Beitbridge border post

In a major bust at the Beitbridge border post, Limpopo Police have arrested a 44-year-old foreign national male for attempting to smuggle illicit cigarettes with  customs value of over R2 million.

The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Thursday, March 20, 2025, after officers discovered  contraband hidden in a freight liner truck with Gauteng registration.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba the driver initially claimed the truck was empty, but thorough search revealed it was actually loaded with pallets and boxes, all containing Remington Gold cigarettes.

In total, authorities found 460 boxes, each containing 100 cartons of illegal cigarettes.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was detained at SAPS Musina and has been charged with smuggling of illicit goods.

He is set to appear before Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face the charges.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended officers involved in the operation for their diligence and stated that South African Police Service remains committed to cracking down on cross-border criminal activities.
