Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has expressed satisfaction with the recently released crime statistics for the 2024/25 first quarter.
The statistics, presented by SAPS Limpopo Policel Commissioner, Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe, show a 2% increase in crime compared to the previous financial year.
However, Mathye remains optimistic, noting that major forms of crime are being effectively managed.
One of the most encouraging trends in the report is the decrease in gender-based violence cases, indicating that law enforcement agencies are responding swiftly to such incidents.
Mathye commended the police for their swift and thorough investigation into the tragic Sebayeng farm murders, where Maria Makgato and Kudzai Ndlovu lost their lives.
Three suspects, Zacharia Olivier, 60, William Musora, 40 a foreign national, and Rudolf De Wit, 19, are appearing in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court, charged with the brutal murder of two women,
The victims’ remains were found in a pig enclosure on a farm in Sebayeng, near Polokwane, after a man who was also shot and injured alerted the police ¹
Preliminary reports indicate that the victims were shot and their bodies dumped in the pig stalls.
The families of the victims are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, with one relative describing the scene as “painful” and “something we have never seen before”.
Another positive highlight in the report is the absence of cash-in-transit heists in the province, thanks to the successful police operation that thwarted criminals in the Makhado incident.
Mathye emphasied the importance of continued vigilance to prevent such high-risk crimes from occurring.
In order to further combat crime in the province, MEC Mathye pledged to ensure that Community Police and Safety Forums are fully operational, focusing on addressing residential area crimes like house burglaries and robberies.
By promoting community involvement in safety initiatives, the province aims to create a safer environment for all residents.
Overall, Limpopo remains committed to improving safety and security for its residents, with law enforcement agencies and communities working together to drive down crime rates.
